Volga Yılmaz Gümüş holds a BA in Translation and Interpreting from Bilkent University, Ankara, and an MA in Translation and Interpreting from Hacettepe University, Ankara. She is currently a research assistant in the Department of Translation and Interpreting, Anadolu University, Eskişehir, Turkey. Her main field of academic interest is translator training.
Research summary
Translator training has mostly been integrated into university settings for the last two decades. This integration has brought into question the relationship between translator training and the translation market. The relationship between these two settings can play a decisive role in the curricular design and practices of translator-training programs and in the improvement of the quality of both translator training and translation services. With a view to describing the degree of the relationship between training and market and the impact of this relationship on translator-training programs in universities and translation companies in the market, this study will make use of questionnaires and interviews to gather data from various stakeholders of both training settings and the market, i.e. academics in translator-training programs, administrators of these programs, students, professional translators, and administrators of translation services. Qualitative data collected through a corpus of job advertisements will be used to support the data from surveys. The results of the study may provide guiding data for the training programs to revise their current curricula and practices in view of the market demands, and to create awareness among all stakeholders as to the quality of work and enhanced interaction among education providers and translation service providers.
