Aims
To develop professional editing and revision skills and gain proficiency in producing clear and concise technical English.
Participants
Editing Technical English is intended for translators, editors and technical writers of English who wish to improve the style and precision of their final drafts, and for trainers and trainees who wish to develop writing competence in English.
Programme
The contents of the course are:
- Definitions and concepts of Editing and Revising
- The five rules of Copyediting
- Stylistic editing (fourteen practical guidelines for achieving clarity and concision)
- The Revision parameters.
By applying the simple techniques of copyediting and stylistic editing outlined in the course, you will turn your papers or draft translations into smooth, accurate and authentic texts in English.
Teaching methods
The online material comprises Word and PDF documents with explanations, illustrations, exercises and sample solutions; PowerPoint presentations; Adobe Presentations with audio commentary; Captivate training videos; and synchronous chat sessions.
Requirements
Four or five hours of study are required per week to read the course materials, view the training videos, and complete the exercises for each lesson. You will also need a computer, a reasonably fast Internet connection, and a working knowledge of English.
Textbook
There is no textbook for this practical course. However, the theoretical framework is provided by Revising and Editing for Translators (Second Edition) by Brian Mossop (Manchester: St Jerome, 2007).
Certificate
Successful participants will be awarded the corresponding certificate from the Fundació Universitat Rovira i Virgili.
